Brian sets sights on world competition at 85 Continued from page 1 Brian, at age 83, picked up his second national record with a 4.15.8 time in the lightweight (under 75kg) 1000m in the 80 plus age category. He says his time had given him confidence to try to get to the World Masters Rowing Regatta on Waikato’s Lake Karapiro in 2017. “I’d like to think I could go there and compete,” he says. “That’s what I’ll be aiming for. Warren Mant earned two national
records in the 2000m and 1000m in the 43 to 49-year-old group. He also won gold in the 500m and 100m. Warren says he had been competing in indoor rowing for more than a decade. Ross says he was a competitive rower for the Blenheim Club in his younger days but he stepped away from the sport when he left Marlborough and came back to it when he returned to the region in
2005. He won three gold medals over the shorter distances in the 55 to 59-year group. “Dad has always been big into the masters events and let’s be honest, it’s pretty special to be able to compete alongside your father at something, especially at my age. Sandy Large had only been competing in indoor rowing for two months but picked up four gold medals in the 36 to 42-year-old age
group. She prevailed in the 2000m, 1000m, 500m and 100m, showing her versatility over the long and sprint distances. “I was going over for netball and I watched it last year and thought it looked like fun and I’d give it a go.” Andrew Denmead proved his worth with two golds over the 500m and 100m distances in the 55 to 59-year-old category.
Brook shows talent at Manfield By Jacob Page Blenheim’s Brook Reeve has demonstrated he is a championship contender after the opening round of the New Zealand Formula First championship at Manfeild. The 17-year-old finished runner-up in two of the three championship races, beaten to the chequered flag by a mere hundreths-of-a-second on both occasions. At the end of the round, Reeve is holding second place in the series, just 23 points behind multiple series champion Michael Shepherd. Reeve has returned to the Formula First singleseater category after debuting last season as the SpeedSport Scholarship winner and finishing with the Rookie of the Year title. After a poorer than expected qualifying effort, Reeve was soon in the lead of the first race from grid five, before a driving mistake sent him off the track. He quickly recovered from 8th place to get back into the lead of the race before contact with a rival dropped him back to sixth at the finish. There were no such mistakes in the following two races and although leading throughout both races, was just pipped for the win in both races at the finish line. “It was a great weekend,” says Reeve. “That would have to be the closest racing I’ve ever had since I started car racing.

“In the last two races we were racing two and three wide through the corners with the lead constantly changing but there was no contact between us, just fast, close racing. “I’m really pleased I came back to this class [Formula First] for another season as this type of racing
is what really makes you sharp as a race car driver. There’s simply no other form of [car] racing in this country where you can get that close, cut-throat competition “It can only be good experience and racecraft for me in future years,” he added.

Laddie’s charitable act for the community By Jacob Page A Blenheim house is to auctioned with all the proceeds going to Marlborough St John and Marlborough Hospice The estate sale of 51 Warwick Street will be auctioned on site on October 21 with Alan ‘Laddie’ Hope keen to see the money benefit Marlborough. Harcourts auctioneer Bryan Palmer says it is a first for him in his career and is both unusual and exciting to know all the money is going to the local community. “The property was owned by a colourful Blenheim character, Alan “Laddie” Hope and the trustees of the estate were pleasantly surprised to learn that everything from the estate was going to local charities and so were we.” He says Laddie was a real salt of the earth character who had his roots in the Marlborough community. “He was very specific about where he wanted the proceeds to go. By Jacob Page The Marlborough Electric Power Trust chairman Ross Inder has made clear the trust’s annual report meeting will not be held this week. Ross says trustees will meet today to set a date for the annual meeting, which will then be
publicly notified when a date has been set. Electricity company Marlborough Lines is owned by the Marlborough Electric Power Trust which holds shares on behalf of all Marlborough power users. Ross says the public is welcome to attend the meeting once a date
is announced. He says in his report, which is yet to be finalised he will mention the 80 per cent purchase of Yealands Wine for $89 million but the matter will not be up for discussion or debate. “As far as I’m concerned the Yealands deal is done.”

Leak detection survey underway in Renwick Workers with acoustic leak detection equipment will be moving around Renwick for the next few days, seeking out leaks in the water reticulation system before moving on to Havelock to continue the search. Staff from Detection Solutions will be locating below-ground leaks in the township water supply lines and picking up leaks on private property. It’s part of Council’s programme to minimise water waste in the township.

Rooney says the last time this work was done a year ago, 32 leaks in the system were pinpointed, seven of them on private property. Leaks can occur when pipes are old or corroded. Stephen says that while the work is underway, staff may need to go onto private property to turn the water off at the toby for a short time. However, he said, the inconvenience should be brief. “We do want residents to be
aware that they may get a knock on the door and be advised not to turn on taps for a short time. Workmen will have the company logo on their clothing and have identification. However anyone with a concern should contact the Council.” The workers will be on the job between 8am and 4.30-5pm for the next two or three days. They will be in Havelock for the first few days of next week.

New building for trucking company The old Cuddons Engineering Building is being demolished to make way for a new building for Wadsco Commercial Vehicles. Sited behind the skate park on Grove Road, the demolishion team from Crafer Crouch are expected to take another week, with the steel in the roof making it heavy going. David Clark from Wadsco Commercial told the Sun he expects with

Volleyball crown Uso’s to lose Uso Fiafia look like undeniable favourites to win the Marlborough Volleyball competition as the premier grade hits the playoffs. In the final round of regular season action, Woodbourne Conscripts took on Pure Samoa and with Woodbourne off to a good start and getting a serving run of 10 points the first game was theirs. Pure Samoa came alive in the second set
and demolished Woodbourne 25-14. The third set saw the pressure mount, with Wynton Brown fighting hard and Daniel Cunningham pulling off some nice spikes, the Woodbourne team really gelled in the final set taking it out 25-22. The front runners Uso Fiafia took on Dank Lords with Uso hitting well and with some very accurate spikes either down the line
and angled. Some great passing and picking up the ball from both sides had the first two sets close. Both sets went to USO 25-20. Dank Lords came back in the third set with Theo Martin-Babin blocking and spiking well. Dank Lords took more risks in this set and came out winners 25-22. Uso again took on Bellas Team in the later
match with Asa Lauvai from USO serving well. Some magic power spikes from USO showed why they are the top team. The final results 3-0 to USO. In the final Premier grade game Tree Fellas played Cri Clovers. Tree Fellas were never in the game, with Cri Clovers staying in control all match with a good result for them three sets to zero.

Traffic officers Dear Ed, Among my circle of friends of mature age, two or three have encountered traffic officers. A recent case highlights the issue. Early morning, one heading to walk the Wither Hills, was “pulled over” because a rear light wasn’t working. Nice gesture despite the serious looking officer. But then he spoiled it by asking for her licence which she didn’t have because she was walking the Wither Hills without her wallet. No retail therapy up there! Whereupon the miserable officer wrote her a ticket for not possessing her licence. This is bad public relations for the police to
have such a mean-spirited officer do this for a good driver with many years on the road. He could easily have said produce your licence within 24 hours. Besides he used his computer to check her credentials so knew she was licensed! But I suppose revenue gathering is the priority? I understand road safety issues, but this is ludicrous. There have been other instances of pettiness like that among my friends. The local police head should give them a session on how to “win friends and influence” drivers for the better, not develop a “them and us” resentful attitude. Motorist
Dear Ed, On a visit to the North Island very recently, petrol prices differed wildly between Blenheim, Wellington and other North Island areas. Blenheim’s 91 octane was well over $2.00. Wellington (a port) was down a bit but at Levin (no port) it was $1.87. Then at Rotorua on the east side of the lake it was $1.86, but on the west side of the lake $2.08. It just doesn’t make sense. But then nor does the free market that allows cartels to operate. Petrol prices lack stability. They fuel inflation and when they differ wildly cause instability. And why is Levin so much less than Marlborough? “Traveller”

Andrea’s recipe for life In less than one year Pandas Kitchen has gained a cult following around Blenheim with its good, old fashioned baking. Sun reporter Jacob Page talks to the woman behind the success Andrea Snushall about turning her passion into a fulltime career, the joys of one-of-a-kind baking and what can be done with a $400 oven and a cake mixer from the 1970s. Andrea Snushall has never been happier in her life. After retiring from her chosen career, she has decided to turn her hobby of home style baking into a fulltime career. Her Hitaua Place house looks no different, inside or out than many others, but it is here with her small $400 oven and cake mixer brought for her by her parents in 1978 that she lets her passion take over. ‘In December last year we got registered with the Council but for years I had been making Christmas cakes and a few people said I should try to sell them,” she says. “I went to the farmers market and sold heaps and heaps of them and I thought ‘let’s see what else we can do’.” Andrea says she starts baking at 7am and it’s not uncommon for her to still be at it late at night. She’s even roped in her husband, Peter, being the Gofer who makes the caramel. “We are at home together and we love being together and we have fun. “This was always something I thought about doing but the timing didn’t seem right until now. Andrea says her mum taught her how to bake and she has evolved what she can cook over time. “I used to enter the Hawarden A & P Show with my sponge cakes
and I used to get duck eggs for that especially and I used to make little Christmas puddings for the old people in my home town in North Canterbury.” However, it was one gift from her parents that set her up for a life-long love affair with baking. “When I was 17, my parents came back from Australia and they came back with a Kenwood Cake Mixer and all the parts. “I’ve used it ever since and it still goes like the clappers. “It’s that farming upbringing I believe. It’s good old-fashioned baking. “None of it is perfect, no two things are the same and that’s the joy of it. “I love making cakes in my $399 oven. “I’ve got the cheapest oven that makes the best cakes. “My mother was a great farm cook and she taught me little secrets. “There are a few secrets to my Afghans and my banana cakes that make them extra yummy.” Andrea says she has “disasters” like any home baker but it’s the imperfections that set her apart. “This kitchen seems to work for me,” she says. “It’s pretty small and it’s not a baker’s kitchen but when I’m in here I’m as happy as Larry. “Happiest I’ve ever been in my life to be honest.
Pandas Kitchen owner Andrea Snushall says cakes have always been a lot of fun to make ever since she was a teenager.
Money isn’t always the thing that brings you happiness, she says. “Going fulltime is scary and I don’t know if it’s the right move but I’m happy. Andrea says she enjoys running a business from home and having the flexibility to look after her granddaughter Addison on a regular basis. “She’s the joy of our lives, she
really is. Andrea says she would look at expanding into making aprons and oven mitts. She says she relaxes when she’s behind a sewing machine. Andrea says the name Pandas Kitchen came from a combination of her and Peter’s first names and from a kitten they had called Panda when they first got married.
Andrea and Peter often travel to Cambodia to help with volunteer efforts and Andrea says they will look to do that again. We’ve had Asian students live with us for years and what we eat is mostly Asian so we’ve always had affection for the place.” For now, Andrea is quite content in her own little slice of baking paradise.

fresh and exciting that we haven’t seen in any other restaurants,” Bu-nga says. One aspect of the menu which has proved tempting to diners has been the Vietnamese selection. “Vietnamese food is very popular in Thailand, and with people becoming more health conscious we felt this menu would provide something fresh and healthy. “We have also included some of our family favourites, including Nuttavut’s mother’s ‘Steamed Fish with Kaffir Lime Leaf and Tamarind Curry’, as well as some other traditional dishes we are sure people will love,” Bu-nga adds. Boost for skating as former world champion visits By Jacob Page Blenheim speed skaters got a mentoring session from former world champion turned coach Cheryl Begg at the weekend. The Timaru-based coach brought four of her age-group skaters with her as a dozen Marlborough skaters got to learn from one of the best in the world. Club coach Sam Pontague says to have arguabley one of the best coaches in the world come to Blenheim is always a positive. "When Cheryl or (husband) Bill are here, we all try to take in as much as we can," she says. "The sessions were very technique focussed which is what we need and what our skaters need."
Sam says a group of Marlborough skaters will travel to Timaru to take part in a regional competition indoors at the SBS Events Centre. They will then have another session on Timaru's outdoor track. "All of the club is excited to get down there and compete, but we certainly appreciate any help we get from them," Sam says. "We have really passionate people who can take training sessions and learn to skate sessions but the technical stuff is something we really enjoy learning about." She says there is a chance some top Marlborough skaters would travel back down to Timaru for the multi-day Tour of Timaru which sees the best skaters from Oceania compete over multiple days on various surfaces.

Sarah is one of several who have entered into the AMP Scholarships ‘People’s Choice’ and to date she is coming in second place on the Nelson/Tasman regional leaderboard, behind motocross rider Josh Coppins. In order for Sarah to get into first place and win the $5,000 regional People’s Choice Scholarship which she says will go toward her professional fashion photography she needs more votes. Voting is open to the public within New Zealand and closes on October 9. How it works is a judging panel in each region will select a shortlist of finalists from their regional

leaderboard and those shortlisted will be invited to meet with the regional judges.

One finalist in each region will be awarded a regional People’s Choice Scholarship. For Sarah the scholarship would open up more training opportunities and give her business vital exposure. “My vision is to change fashion photography and take it in a new direction. “To do this I would like to do more training workshops, but unfortunately they are mostly held overseas. “I have already trained under my mentor Emily Soto in Melbourne and New York, but I have other photographers on my bucket list I want to learn from. This scholarship would enable me to travel to them and really benefit my business,” she says. Growing up Trich Dixon wanted to be a truck driver so it’s no surprise to find her working for Transmar Services. Trich began in administration five years ago and now takes care of everything from invoicing through to working in the parts department, and sometimes even out driving a truck. “Every day is different, there are lots of challenges but it’s the customers and our team here that make my job so enjoyable,” she says. Transmar Services is owned by Peter and Felicity Kenyon and operates 24 hours, seven days a week.
Its Riverlands based workshop provides service and repair to trucks, campervans and motorhomes, while a tractor unit and low bed trailer are on standby for recovering broken down vehicles. “We are also agents for AA so if you have broken down we will come and put your vehicle on our truck and take it the nearest authorised repairer,” Trich says. Trucks and large vehicles aren’t the only areas of transport they cater to. Transmar Services is a Cummins agent and has a service vehicle that travels to Picton and Havelock to fix and service marine engines.

Wendie Cantwell Wendie Cantwell is a woman of many talents. Working alongside her father Ian in their family business Cantwell Joinery & Window Centre Ltd, Wendie does everything from designing kitchens through to the cutting out and arranging of installation. More recently Wendie has begun to take on more of a hands on role in the day to day running of the business, as Ian reduces his hours. She insists nothing will change with the business. “It’s business as usual. I will be working alongside my father and taking on some of his workload so he can step back
a little more. “I’m looking forward to this challenge and having more involvement in the family business,” she says. Black Sticks bounce back in Blenheim By Jacob Page After being out-classed in game one the New Zealand Black Sticks women’s hockey team bounced back in commanding fashion to win the second game in the double header at Blenheim. After a 1-2 loss in the opening game of the South Island Tour the Black Sticks got the result they wanted on Sunday thanks to goals from Kirsten Pearce, Gemma Flynn and Olivia Merry. It wasn’t all plain sailing though for the hosts as goals from Maria Granatto and then Noel Barrionuevo’s erased the early 1-0 advantage they had earned. Two penalty corner goals in the second half, including the match-winner four minutes from the final whistle saw them level
the series. It was a much improved performance from the home team than their opening day effort. Argentina looked to have superior time on the ball and stick control in the first encounter and were good value for their win. The Black Sticks largely relied on counter-attack opportunities but a flashy goal from Shiloh Gloyn set up a grandstand finish in the final four minutes. The goal did illustrate what the Black Sticks were capable of and what they were able to produce in game two the following day. The two teams now travel to Nelson where they face each other Black Sticks defender Sam Charlton looks to move the ball to space during again at 5pm tonight.
